Slow load times? Here are my tips to help you load Garry's Mod faster

    Posted: 21 Nov 2020 12:53 AM PST

    Hey everyone,

I have been loving VR in Garry's Mod for the last few weeks now, but one thing that kills my immersion and irritates me are long load times. I have an older computer and an SSD, so I looked for ways to reduce load times significantly where I could tolerate waiting for a few seconds instead of sometimes, up to one and a half minutes at most.

Here's a short list of tips and tricks for you to lower load times:

1)Upgrade to an NVME M.2 drive. With sequential reads of 3 gb/s - 5 gb/s and writes of 2.5 - 3.5 gb/s, you're talking about significantly cutting load times 6-10 times as much as it would take an SSD to load the same content.

2)Although marginal, unpacking .vpks and .gmas should decrease load times by a few seconds (1-5 seconds depending on size of files) and placing them within their respective folders OR straight into GarrysMod/garrysmod (watchout for overwrites).

    3) Overclock your CPU, or if underclocked, put it at stock settings. I undervolted and underclocked my CPU last year for some reason and I had forgotten about it until today. A few hundred mhz increase in clock rate can decrease load times by a few seconds (one to two seconds). A substantial increase, like one ghz if possible, could be a reduction of up to five seconds.

4)Make sure Windows is not throttling your CPU. Go to "Power Management" and advanced options. There, select the CPU option and change the modifiers to 100%

5)Only mount games and mods that are necessary. Excessive addons will cause you to load extremely slowly. Remember, you can only play one level at a time and some maps can exceed 200-500 megabytes in size (sandbox or RP maps). Vary your rotation with maps that use assets that are already provided with Half Life 2, Garry's Mod, or any of the other minimal mounted games you have.

Try mounting smaller addons that effect gameplay. Aesthetic, clientside, and 'filler addons' that provide little gameplay enhancement should be avoided if you're looking to reduce load times.

    6) If you're playing Half-Life source in Garry's Mod, try the "Half-Life Resized" maps. These maps cut down the 120 maps in HL1 down to 21 maps where many of them are combined and merged. I am looking forward to seeing this done in Half Life 2 but it is a real pain in the ass with HL2. I was playing around in Hammer today when I decided that it wouldn't be worth my time given how many engine limitations there are although the grid size for maps in units is quite large. Large enough as a matter of fact that 4-6 maps can be placed on one grid at once with proper placement.

Skyboxes, lighting, entities, triggers, scripts and a bunch of other problems came up through this research so I decided to leave it for another day. I am thinking of a solution that is an illusory form of level streaming where brushes, geometry and other troublesome entities that are no longer within a certain radius (a reasonable and lengthy radius) would disappear but I need to plan it out better.

7)Don't use a RamDisk. I tried using a RamDisk to emulate purchasing an NVME but FAT-32 file systems on RAM are particularly useless without NTFS and the associated I/O, caching and calls that occur on regular HDDS/SSDs. The load times were about the same with no noticeable difference. Buy an NVME and don't use a ram disk.

8)Try maps with little entities, brushes and other map features that are enjoyable. Valve has particularly optimized their levels to be well within acceptable hard-coded limits, but as many of you know, GMOD can be taxing with a lot of SNPCs, Lua scripts, etc. Any Lua scripts that effect many NPCs will significantly slow down loading times, so keep that in mind.

So how are the results? Well, I used Half-Life Resized's hls003amrl and hls004amrl as rudimentary testing benchmarks. Each of these maps has 6 maps contained in them with a lot of NPCs, scripts, objects, brushes, geometry, etc.

    ------

    hls003amrl

First load without any changes: 40 seconds to 1 minute and 30 seconds

First load with changes: 25 to 55 seconds

    ------

Then, once all the resources for the campaign, addons, mounted games and Garry's Mod were loaded into memory, I loaded up hls004amrl as another benchmark for real world results in terms of what would be expected in level transitions

    ------

    hls004amrl

Second load without any changes: 40-60 seconds

Second load with changes: 15-17 seconds

    ------

So after this is all said and done, half a minute may not seem like much to most people on a day to day basis, but it is very noticeable in VR. There is less hold up time and gameplay transitions are more fluid. Here's the real world performance you could expect with an NVME and following the recommendations in this guide:

    ------

    hls003amrl + NVME (3.5 gb/s read and 2.7 gb/s write)

First load without any changes: 7 seconds to 15 seconds

First load with changes: 5 to 10 seconds

    ------

    Loaded in Memory -->

    ------

    hls004amrl + NVME 3.5 gb/s read and 2.7 gb/s write)

Second load without any changes: 7 to 8.5 seconds

Second load with changes: 2.5 to 3 seconds

    ----------

For perspective, the "without changes" addon and mounting loadout consisted of 30+ gb of addons and for mounting, HLS, HL2, HL2 EP 1 & 2, HL2 DM, CSS, CSGO.

The with changes addon and mounting loadout consisted of 1.72 gb of addons and for mounting, HLS, HL2 and CSS, the bare minimum needed to run GMOD smoothly w/out missing textures for Half-Life Resized.

My relevant system specs are as follows:

    i7 4790k @ 4.1 ghz

    nvidia 1050 ti

    32 gb DDR3 ram

450 mb/s read (sequential) and 320 mb/s write (sequential) SSD.

I hope you guys find this little guide useful!

Need help finding an old map.

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 09:55 PM PST

I'm trying to find a map from way back in the day- I don't remember the title, but I vividly remember a few features. It was set inside of a city, and had a train that was pre-installed in the map, which traveled from a train station next to a parking garage to a smaller train station that was near a canal. Also featured in the map was a set of docks with a crane and an off-shore aircraft carrier. I also vaguely remember the map having a tavern/bar, as well as an underground prison. Multiple buildings in the city were destroyed or looked like they had been through combat. Not all buildings, but some. The skybox was from HL2:E2, as it featured the destroyed citadel in the skybox. I think it was an RP map. This may be a very meticulous request, but if anyone can help me, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Are there any addons that improve the NPC "squad" mechanic, or let them ride with you in vehicles?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 03:05 PM PST

I've been enjoying running around with random NPCs following me, but the default allied AI (from HL2) leaves a lot to be desired in my experience. Anything to make them less useless would be appreciated, but specifically is there anything that will let me put my squad in vehicles (especially simfphys or LFS, but I'll take anything at this point)?

Can Someone Understand how Stop Motion Helper Works

Cw 2.0 and arccw and are great customizable guns. The cw 2.0 is great and has more weapons than arccw but cw 2.0 add ons are need to be downloaded individually. While the arccw is in packs. The arccw feels like an old shooter gun but more attachments but sometimes the creators make names incorrect.

Addon to download missing textures before loading a single player map?

    Posted: 20 Nov 2020 11:50 AM PST

I'm downloading a lot of maps on workshop to race with my friends tonight, but the majority of them use textures from other games and have the pink/black missing texture, and some don't have on the description the source games we need the textures to download. Is there any addon that downloads everything I need to play the map correctly alone? Like, on single player, that just downloads before entering the map all I need to not see errors and missing textures, without needing to download the entire game packs from gmodcontent.com?
