    Server is not responding when trying to join friend's game

    My friend and I are trying to play gmod rn. We want him to start the sandbox since he has all the good mods, but when I try to join him through steam it says Server is not responding. However, when I started the server, he was easily able to join. How can I fix this so I can join him?

    Looking for a map

    Does anyone know the name of a map I'm trying to find? It's an underground train station with a set of tracks either side of the platform, kind of like a subway/metro kind of thing. There's often npc trains that come by that you can get hit by. Might be worth noting there is a small crawl space under the platform between the tracks, and on one track there is a hole underneath you can crouch in where you can see the trains go over you. There is also some other areas of map that I cant remember too well, except there's an area with a ladder and explosive barrels. Similar to but not Gm_TrainStation

    If anyone knows or uses this map the help would be greatly appreciated! :)

    Gmod RP Rant

    Section 1: The rules

    Whenever I join a server, theres usually some rules. And the problem with these rules is simple: They are too fucking many of them.

    Lets take an example: Exhibition Mexican Border RP rules, which you can look at right here: (https://www.exhibitionrp.com/topic/14700-mbrp-server-rules/)

    If you look at the rules, there are 40 general rules. 40 rules alone is way too fucking much, and this is the general rules, which is what is gonna be generally applicable in most scenarios.

    Also, some of the rules are stupid. Lets have 3 examples of the rules in which I think are dumb and I will explain to you why I think they're dumb.

    1: You must advertise your actions (kidnap, raid, PD raid, bank raid, etc). Along with that, you are not allowed to stack binds (Universal Binds).

    Why is this stupid:

    Because nobody in their right fucking mind would tell anyone any of this. Do you really think a murder who wants to murder you is gonna go say "Oh yeah BTW, just so you know, I am going to attempt to take your life." I thought so, and if you wanna RP a robbery or a murder, thats not what happens in a murder or a robbery.

    2: Contract killers may only use their shadow knives for the purpose of completing a hit

    Why is this stupid:

    Because its a weapon. It's like telling me that I can only use my kitchen knife to cut fruits when theres clearly more that the knife can do. It just limits peoples creativity for no reason other than "The owner said so"

    3: You may not murder the President

    Why is this stupid:

    Because a murder doesn't care whether their target is of importance or not. All this does is give the president a "Murder-free" experience.

    In total, in the link that I gave about, there are 220 rules. 200 and fucking 20 rules, for a border RP. It is nearly impossible for new players to have fun w/o breaking some of those rules.

    Section 2: The RP

    Now, a great RP experience is one in which you feel immersed in. Immersion is what many RP servers lack.

    Lets compare a classic game of DnD to MilitaryRP

    In DnD, you can customize your character, with different classes, starting weapons, and stats.

    In MilitaryRP, I can't even exchange for my M19 for a Shotgun, or even have a variant of the M19.

    In DnD, every character interaction could mean life, death, a new spell, a new area to explore, a new enemy to face, a new ally to help you or even just some simple character banter.

    In MilitaryRP, the only people that matter are your CO's (Commanding Officers) and your General. The only thing they do is bark orders at you which have almost no meaning.

    In DnD, you can interact with the world as you wish and the world will act back to you accordingly.

    In MilitaryRP, if I even dare to do something thats not an order of a CO or a General, its not even the world that punishes me for it, its the admins.

    In DnD, every game is unique and is dependant on your Game Master.

    In MilitaryRP, EVERY FUCKING MAP IS THE SAME! I SWEAR, THEY ALL HAVE SOME SHITTY BASE NEXT TO A TOWN, WHICH IS NEXT TO THE OTHER SHITTY BASE!

    As you can see, DnD is the superior RP experience.

    But why? It's simple:

    Gmod was designed as a sandbox experience in mind, where you can download fortnite dances and Sans skins.

    DnD was designed with the RP in mind.

    Case in point: if your game isn't designed around RP in mind, then maybe don't make an entire mode out of it.

    Section 3: Star Wars RP

    Imagine MilitaryRP but 10x worse and with no opposing force: Star Wars RP

    At least in MilitaryRP, theres usually a Taliban or a Russian I can fight which at least makes the regiment differences matter a little.

    Not in Star Wars RP.

    There is very little practical difference between a normal Storm trooper and a Scout trooper because none of them are gonna use their weapons, vehicles, skills, etc... because theres no one to use them against except each other.

    Now I do get that some servers have Events, which usually last an hour, but that means that 23 hours are spent doing nothing exciting.

    And that concludes my rant.

    Any programs that can extract models and textures from source maps?

    I've been trying to use Crafty to extract the map, textures and models from old Gmod maps, but it NEVER seems to be able to get the textures of the map! There's probably only 2 or 3 maps i've tried that actually gave me most-all of the textures. Are there any other programs that can extract the 3d model AND textures from a source map? (I'm mainly doing Garry's Mod maps.)

    GMod server operators of reddit, what Hoster/Host OS/distribution does your server run on?

    Backstory Time:

    I created/am actively working on two binary HTTP replacement modules ("chttp", which uses curl, and "steamhttp", which uses the built-in Steam HTTP interface), which go along with my (totally not a shameless plug) Discord addon.

    Due to the fact that installing a binary module is a bit more involving than your usual addon installation, I decided to create detailed setup instructions to setting them up.

    However, due to differences accross distributions, those instructions will differ, especially with setting up dependencies and actual compatibility of the binaries. Having no experience with servers that are hosted on hosting services (neither on "gameserver hosters", nor on actual VPS servers), I decided to ask here, so that I can manually fire up that OS/version in a Virtual Machine and test it.

    What would be the most important Information:

    • OS (i.e. Windows or Linux)
    • Distribution and version (if that applies. Not sure if there is an important difference between Windows and Windows Server, but if you know, it would be great if you could mention that as well.)
    • Hoster (if you want to disclose that)
    • Level of access (e.g. "only a Start/Stop button", "I can install binary modules", actual filesystem access, "I-have-root-and-can-install-packages", etc.)

    Does anyone know how to get this addon now? I believe its quite essential to dark rp. The creator sadly passed away and all his stuff was pulled from gmodstore. Anyone know if you could get it anywhere else?
