HELP! authenticating with steam stuck

So, my friend brought his laptop over to my house to play gmod. Unfortunately, I don't have Internet and we decided to just connect the laptops with a ethernet cable. We got the private server set up and I joined his server, but when I joined him the loading bar stayed at "Authenticating with steam". We thought that it was normal and decided to wait for a while. After 5 hours, we gave up. Does anyone know how to fix this?

Black dot in the middle of the screen

Whenever I load a Sandbox game, there's this black dot in the middle of the screen, where the crosshair is, it's always there even when I pause the game, I checked my addons and none seemed to add this, is there anything I can do to get rid of this black dot?
